Our History

The hotel was originally constructed in 1910. An ad for the hotel read "3 storey, 48x56, all conveniences including two furnaces, 28 comfortable rooms, 2 parlours, bathrooms, etc. open for business November 1911". The original hotel burnt to the ground that year, but was rebuilt shortly after, with funding from a brewery in Calgary, with the contingency that they sold their beer. There were a few loopholes in the prohibition act that the hotel managed to survive through. Halkirk has been a small town stop on the Canadian pacific railway since the 1900s. The railway and grain elevator are no longer used by the CPR, but our building stands proud next to highway 12. Extensive renovations have brought the current building to its impressive conditions while retaining the original character and spirit of the old west. The hotel is the only one remaining of its design in the province.

We came for steak night and it was absolutely delicious. The steak was so tender and flavourful, and the drinks and service were even better. The new owners and staff are so friendly, welcoming, down to earth and have the greatest sense of humour!! Can’t wait to go back!!

Beautifully restored small-town hotel. 19th century ambiance, authentic woodwork, copper-panel ceiling, stained glass accents,... with all modern updates, cleanliness, friendly staff, and great food!

Dog friendly patio in the back was really great. Service like you won't find in the city. Stayed in the suite before (not on this trip); really great room. Lots of character at this place and now craft beer and tea in stock
